Keeping your GeJay Media Joomla template updated helps ensure you receive the latest improvements, bug fixes, and compatibility updates. GeJay Media commercial templates support Joomla's built-in extension update system, making it easy to check for and install available updates.
This tutorial explains how to check for template updates, install an available update, and verify that the installation was successful.
Before You Begin
Before updating your template, make sure that:
- Your GeJay Media template is installed and working on your Joomla website.
- You have configured your template update key and have access to eligible updates.
- You have a recent backup of your website, including its files and database.
- Your website meets the compatibility requirements for the new template version.
If you haven't configured your update key, see our Activating Template Updates with Your Update Key tutorial before proceeding.
Step 1: Check for Available Updates
- Log in to your Joomla administrator area.
- From the administrator menu, select System.
- Under Update, select Extensions.
- Click Check for Updates to refresh the list of available extension updates.
- Look for your GeJay Media template in the list of available updates.
If your template appears in the list, Joomla has detected an available update.
If no update is listed, your installed version may already be current, or Joomla may not have detected a newer eligible release.
Step 2: Install the Template Update
Once Joomla displays an available update for your GeJay Media template:
- Review the available version information and any accompanying update notes.
- Select the checkbox beside your GeJay Media template.
- Click Update in the toolbar.
- Wait for Joomla to download and install the update.
- Confirm that Joomla displays a successful update message.
Important: Do not close your browser or navigate away from the update screen while the installation is in progress.
Step 3: Verify the Updated Template
After the update has completed, confirm that your template is working correctly.
- Open your website's frontend in a new browser tab.
- Check the homepage and a few other important pages.
- Confirm that the navigation, images, modules, and page layouts display correctly.
- Review your template settings to ensure your configuration has been retained.
You can also check the installed template version through Joomla's extension management interface.
If your website uses caching, clear the relevant caches if you notice outdated styling or layout elements after updating.
What Happens to Your Customizations?
Template updates replace files included in the template installation package. Settings stored through Joomla's template configuration are normally retained during an update.
However, changes made directly to the template's PHP, CSS, JavaScript, or other distributed files may be overwritten when a new version is installed.
To reduce the risk of losing customizations, avoid modifying the original template files whenever possible. Keep a record and backup of any custom changes before installing updates.
Troubleshooting
My template doesn't appear in the available updates
Confirm that your update key has been entered correctly and that your membership provides access to updates. You can also click Check For Updates again to refresh Joomla's update information.
If no newer version has been released, your template will not appear in the available updates list.
The update failed to install
Review the error message displayed by Joomla. An update may fail because of download authorization, server configuration, file permissions, or other installation issues.
Confirm that your update key is correct and that your hosting environment meets the template's requirements. If the problem continues, contact GeJay Media support with the error message and your installed template version.
My website looks different after updating
Clear your Joomla and browser caches, then reload the affected pages. Review your template settings and any custom modifications that may have been affected by the update.
If the issue persists, consult the release notes for the updated version or contact GeJay Media support.
